Gaylord R. Anderson, affectionately known as “Andy,” passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. Born on February 1, 1934, in Joice, IA, Gaylord was the son of Gilman and M. Oletta Anderson. A Northwood High School graduate from the class of 1952, Gaylord served in the United States Army in Korea with the #440 Signal Aviation Construction Battalion (SACB) and the Air Force Special Services until his honorable discharge in 1957. On June 28, 1959, he married Barbara Ann Hayson, with whom he shared four children: Rita, Carla, Lori, and Calvin.

Gentle Giant, Green Bay Packers Devotee

Known for his warm smile and gentle demeanor, Gaylord, affectionately called “Gigs” by many, found joy in life’s simple pleasures. An avid Green Bay Packers fan, he never missed a game, bringing enthusiasm and passion to every match. From leisurely drives through the countryside to splitting wood for the family fireplace, Gaylord cherished moments that connected him to nature and his loved ones. Music was his lifelong passion, showcasing his drumming talent from a young age. His faith was the bedrock of his existence, finding solace and community at Crossroads Church in Albert Lea. Family and friends held a special place in Gaylord’s heart, relishing in family gatherings, reminiscing with Army comrades, and swapping tales with cousins. Above all, he took immense pride in his role as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

A Lasting Legacy

Gaylord leaves behind a cherished legacy, survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara, and their children: Rita (Steve) Ness, Carla Anderson, Lori (Mark) Haugebak, and Calvin Anderson. His grandchildren, Jaime (Jared) Crum, Jessa (Brian) Brooks, and Kyle (Danica) Haugebak, along with six great-grandchildren, will forever hold his memory close. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Janet Anderson, and brothers-in-law, Tom (Kindra) Hayson and Sanford (Ana) Hayson, along with nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Gaylord is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Marvin and Alvin “AJ” Anderson, sister-in-law Agnes Anderson, and Barbara’s parents, Tom and Emma Hayson.

As his family privately honors his memory, Gaylord R. Anderson’s spirit lives on through the stories and memories shared by those who knew and loved him.
