The University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls is gearing up for some major changes at the UNI-Dome, with renovations that will finally include adding more restrooms. According to UNI vice president Michael Hager, this phase of upgrades marks the first time the restrooms will be updated since the building was constructed way back in 1976.
“If you’ve ever been to events like the high school football playoffs or concerts by Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones, or Luke Bryan, you’ve probably noticed that there just aren’t enough restrooms for the ladies. We’re finally doing something about that,” Hager explains. The plan is to install 5,400 square feet of new restrooms on the northwest and southwest corners of the Dome. “We’re talking about adding 44 facilities for women, 18 more for men, a few single-use restrooms for families, and even a lactation room. It’s all part of the renovation package,” he adds.
In addition to the restroom upgrades, other areas near the new facilities will also be getting a facelift. Hager mentions that there are a couple of terraces, jokingly referred to as the ‘party decks’, which are mainly used for group outings, alumni events, and corporate gatherings. The renovation project, which comes with an $8.4 million price tag for this second phase, may also include improvements in signage and sound systems.
While the first phase of renovations is still ongoing, with new seating being installed inside the Dome, Hager emphasizes that fundraising efforts for the restroom project need to be completed before construction can begin. So, it looks like there’s still some work to be done before attendees can enjoy the upgraded facilities.
All in all, the upcoming changes at the UNI-Dome are set to greatly enhance the overall experience for visitors. With more restrooms, improved facilities, and a modernized look, the UNI-Dome is sure to attract even more crowds for future events. So, stay tuned for more updates as the renovation project progresses.
