Braden Fels: A Personal Tale of Iowa State
Braden Fels, a senior studying political science and the president of the Inter-Residence Hall Association (IRHA) at Iowa State University, recently shared his journey at the university and his deep involvement on campus. Raised in a family deeply rooted in Cyclone pride, Fels reminisced about his childhood, where his father’s alma mater greatly influenced his own collegiate path.
“My dad went to Iowa State,” Fels fondly recalled. “He was the class of ’92, so I was born wearing the cardinal and gold. Some of the earliest photos I can remember of myself are wearing my Cyclone onesie or sitting on the couch watching Iowa State football.”
Despite his early affinity for the school, Fels initially considered applying to other colleges upon graduating from high school. However, a pivotal moment came when his father encouraged him to visit Iowa State, sparking a profound realization.
“Throughout my high school career, I had started looking at different colleges,” Fels explained. “My dad was like, ‘You don’t have to apply, but you have to visit Iowa State.’ It was one of those where the second I stepped onto campus, I knew I was home.”
Upon commencing his journey at Iowa State, Fels found himself with ample free time and a desire to engage in campus activities. This led him to run for the IHRA representative position for Willow Hall, a decision that would shape his college experience significantly.
“Applications opened, I applied, got accepted and that was it,” Fels reflected. “I didn’t apply anywhere else. I knew this was where I wanted to be.”
Currently, Fels holds the esteemed position of IRHA president and also serves as the director of residence life for Student Government. In these leadership roles, he champions student advocacy and underscores the significance of student voices in shaping campus life.
“I got involved right away,” Fels shared. “When my RA freshman year sent us an email saying that they needed an Inter-Residence Hall Association representative for Willow Hall, I was like, ‘I have no clue what that might be, but I need something to do.'”
Embracing Cyclone Pride
Fels’ deep-rooted connection to Iowa State, fostered by his father’s legacy, serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of Cyclone pride that runs through generations of families. This sense of tradition and community has not only shaped Fels’ academic journey but has also inspired his commitment to fostering a vibrant campus environment for his fellow students.
