Kysen Terukina stole the show with an 8-3 win over North Dakota State’s Lucas Rodriguez, contributing to the Cyclones’ dominant 26-9 triumph over the Bison on Jan. 23, 2022.

Setting the tone

The Cyclones kicked off the event by breezing through their matches against Lock Haven, securing a convincing 20-6 victory. Senior Kysen Terukina set the stage for success by triumphing over Lucas Fye at 125, marking his first win of the season. Freshman Osmany Diversent followed suit by defeating No. 13 Anthony Noto at 133 in a notable upset. Cyclone sophomores Jacob Frost, Cody Chittum, Manny Rojas, and MJ Gaitan also delivered strong performances, while senior Evan Bockman and freshman Daniel Herrera sealed the deal with decisive wins at 184 and 285, respectively.

Returns and debuts

Following their triumph over Lock Haven, Iowa State continued their winning streak by overcoming North Carolina with a 23-14 victory. Sophomore Nate Schon made a memorable debut by filling in for the injured Christian Carroll and securing a 7-2 win over Cade Lautt. Terukina and Chittum continued their winning streak, with Frost also impressing with a dominant 10-1 victory. Paniro Johnson’s late takedown added to the Cyclones’ success, while Evan Frost and Yonger Bastida made impactful returns to the mat.

A rough end to the day

Despite their earlier triumphs, the Cyclones faced a tough challenge in their final dual against No. 5 Ohio State, resulting in a 29-10 loss. The team secured only three wins out of ten matches, with sophomore Carter Fousek facing a particularly challenging day. However, Chittum’s impressive win over No. 7 Paddy Gallagher stood out as a highlight, showcasing the Cyclones’ resilience in the face of adversity.

Looking ahead

The Cyclones will have a chance to bounce back in their upcoming Big 12 conference bout against West Virginia on Jan. 8. The team remains determined to showcase their strength and determination as they continue their pursuit of victory in the wrestling arena.
