Sen. Grassley Supports Confirming Trump’s Attorney General Pick
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley has signaled his support for confirming President-elect Trump’s attorney general nominee, Pam Bondi. Grassley will chair two days of hearings starting tomorrow as Bondi appears before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Grassley, known for his careful consideration of nominees, expressed his positive impression of Bondi’s track record as the former attorney general of Florida and her work as a prosecutor. He mentioned being eager to learn more about Bondi’s plans for the Justice Department.
Despite his usual reserved stance on nominees before hearings, Grassley shared that he is “leaning towards” voting to confirm Bondi for the post. However, he emphasized the importance of hearing her public responses to questions about her plans for the department.
Grassley’s Expectations for the Justice Department
Grassley emphasized the need for the Department of Justice to refocus its efforts on enforcing the law, protecting American whistleblowers, and responding to congressional oversight. He highlighted his dissatisfaction with the lack of responses from the DOJ over the past four years under the current administration.
Meeting with Bondi
In a recent meeting with Bondi in his office, Grassley shared his frustration with the lack of response to his inquiries, showing her a packet of 158 letters, half of which were directed to the FBI. He expressed his concerns about the non-responsive or inadequate answers received.
Bondi has an impressive background as Florida’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019, making history as the first woman elected to the position. She also played a role as one of Trump’s defense lawyers during his first impeachment trial in 2020.
Senator Grassley’s willingness to support Bondi’s confirmation, pending her responses during the upcoming hearings, reflects his commitment to thorough evaluation and accountability in the nomination process. As the Senate prepares for the confirmation hearings, the spotlight remains on Bondi’s qualifications and plans for leading the Justice Department.
