The University of Iowa wrestling team has once again emerged victorious, securing their seventh-straight Soldier Salute team title in Coralville, Iowa. With an impressive total score of 248 points, the Hawkeyes showcased their dominance in the wrestling arena. Seven talented wrestlers from the team also clinched individual titles, further solidifying their prowess on the mat.
Drake Ayala, a standout athlete from the Iowa Athletics, claimed the 133-pound title with a remarkable technical fall over his teammate Kale Petersen. The thrilling victory was a testament to Ayala’s skill and dedication to the sport.
In a series of intense matchups, Kyle Parco and Michael Caliendo emerged victorious in top-10 clashes to secure their respective titles. Parco exhibited his tenacity by defeating the sixth-ranked Lachlan McNeil of UNC with a score of 8-5. Similarly, Caliendo showcased his resilience in a close match against the ninth-ranked Andrew Sparks, ultimately prevailing with a score of 7-6.
The Hawkeyes’ success continued as Patrick Kennedy triumphed over Navy’s 18th-ranked Danny Wask to claim the title at 174 pounds. Angelo Ferrari also displayed his prowess by accepting a medical forfeit over his teammate, the sixth-ranked Gabe Arnold, at 184 pounds.
Stephen Buchanan and Ben Kueter further solidified the team’s victory by securing wins in their respective weight classes. Buchanan defeated Missouri’s Aeoden Sinclair with a major decision of 15-4, while Kueter clinched a tight 1-0 decision against Minnesota’s Bennett Tabor.
In a heartening display of sportsmanship and resilience, Jace Rhodes, a former Mason City Riverhawk, fought his way to a fourth-place finish at 141 pounds. Similarly, Joey Cruz and Cullan Schriever showcased their grit by securing sixth-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
