Iowa State Cyclones Showcase Stellar Performance at Ameritas Master Classic
In a thrilling display of athleticism and skill, the Iowa State Cyclones gymnastics team delivered an impressive performance at the Ameritas Master Classic, securing a well-deserved second-place finish out of four competing teams. The event, held at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa on March 7, 2025, saw the Cyclones earn a total of 196.100 points, narrowly missing the top spot to No. 20 Nebraska, who clinched victory with a score of 196.450. Texas Woman’s University claimed the third spot with 195.975 points, while Temple rounded out the competition with a total of 194.550.
Early Success on the Bars
The Cyclones made their mark early in the competition, particularly excelling on the uneven bars where they showcased exceptional talent. Freshman Frederique Sgarbossa led the team with a stellar performance, scoring an impressive 9.850 and securing third place overall. Sophomore Paige Wills also delivered a strong performance, earning a score of 9.800 and tying for sixth place in the event.
Vaulting to Victory
The team continued to impress on the vault, with Sgarbossa and freshman Haylee Hardin putting on a show-stopping performance that resulted in a three-way tie for second place with Nebraska’s Ayzhia Hall. Each gymnast scored a remarkable 9.850, contributing to the Cyclones’ overall score of 49.100 in the event.
A Flourish on the Floor
Iowa State truly hit their stride on the floor exercise, delivering a standout performance that earned them their highest team event score of the competition at 49.300. Hardin and sophomore Noelle Adams shone brightly, tying for third place with scores of 9.900 each. Seniors Josie Bergstrom-Te Slaa and Rachel Wilke also made their mark, tying for fifth place with scores of 9.850 each, showcasing the depth and talent of the Cyclones team.
Balancing Act on the Beam
In the final event, the balance beam, Adams continued to impress with a score of 9.850, leading her to tie with Nebraska’s Emma Spence and Texas Woman’s Steelie King in a three-way tie. Bergstrom-Te Slaa also delivered a solid performance, tying for seventh place with Temple’s Madison Dorunda and Nebraska’s Whitney Jencks with a score of 9.825. Collectively, the Cyclones earned a score of 48.850 on the beam, further solidifying their position in the competition.
