LaVerne Sheeler: A Life Well-Lived
LaVerne Floyd Sheeler, a beloved member of the Ackley community, passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the Eldora Nursing and Rehab. The legacy of this remarkable man will be honored with a family graveside inurnment at the Lindenwood Cemetery in Geneva. Following this intimate gathering, a luncheon for family and friends will be held at the Ackley American Legion on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 12:00 PM. The caring team at Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory of Iowa Falls is assisting the Sheeler family during this difficult time.
Early Life and Education
LaVerne Sheeler was born on September 7, 1932, to Floyd and Gladys Sheeler in Sioux City, Iowa. His passion for education was evident from a young age, leading him to graduate from the Hampton Community Schools and serve in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1954. LaVerne furthered his education by obtaining a teaching degree from the Iowa Teacher’s College, now known as UNI.
Family and Community Involvement
In 1956, LaVerne married Lucille Deanna Koch at the United Methodist Church in Geneva, Iowa. Together, they welcomed three daughters: Lucinda, Lynnette, and Lorinda. After Lucille’s passing in 1977, LaVerne found love again and married Jan Wessels in 1981. Throughout his life, LaVerne was deeply involved in the Ackley community, serving as an active member of various organizations, including the American Legion and Lion’s Club. His dedication to community service and leadership roles left a lasting impact on those around him.
A Life Well-Lived and Legacy
In addition to his commitment to education and community, LaVerne enjoyed hobbies such as woodworking, coin collecting, rock hunting, gardening, and card playing. Even after retiring from teaching, he remained active and dedicated, delivering the Waterloo Courier alongside his wife, Jan. LaVerne’s love for his family was unmatched, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and kindness.
LaVerne Sheeler is survived by his wife, Jan, his daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and siblings. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched and the lasting impact he made on the Ackley community.
