His service was marked by dedication and bravery, earning him an honorable discharge in 1954.
Upon returning to Mason City, Bernie’s life took a new turn when he met the love of his life, Peggy Phelan, at a local dance. His professional journey was equally diverse, with stints at St. Clair-Starks Clothiers, Retail Credit Company (now Equifax), and various ventures in real estate, house appraisals, and crop adjusting.
Outside of work, Bernie’s passion for restoration led him to remodel houses and rebuild salvage title cars. He even tried his hand at entrepreneurship, owning and operating the Nora Springs Drive Inn restaurant for a period. His adventurous spirit and entrepreneurial drive were truly inspiring, showcasing his resilience and creativity in all endeavors.

Bernie will be fondly remembered for his mischievous humor, love of pranks, and thrifty ways that earned him the endearing nickname “El Cheapo” among his friends.
