Remembering Msgr. Carl Lambert Schmitt: A Tribute to His Life and Legacy
Monsignor Carl Lambert Schmitt, a beloved figure in the New Hampton, IA community, passed away on January 8, 2025, at the age of 89 at MercyOne Medical Center. His life has left an indelible mark on all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Man of Faith and Service
Born on November 2, 1935, Msgr. Schmitt was the fifth of eleven children to Joseph and Anna Schmitt, a farming family in the St. Lucas area. His upbringing instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep sense of family values that would guide him throughout his life.
After completing his education, including studies at Loras College and seminary studies in Dubuque, Fr. Carl was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Dubuque on March 18, 1961. His commitment to Catholic education and service to the community was unwavering, serving in various roles within the church and education system over the years.
A Life of Dedication
From his early days at Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville to his pastoral roles at various churches in Dubuque and New Hampton, Fr. Carl’s dedication to his faith and his parishioners was evident in all that he did. In lieu of flowers, Fr. Carl’s family has requested that memorials be made to St. Joseph School in New Hampton, a testament to his lifelong commitment to education and nurturing young minds.
