The 2025 Student Government Election Voter Guide
Ames City Council and Iowa State Student Government convened in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union on November 20, 2024, to kick off the impending Student Government election season. This crucial event marks the beginning of the election process that will determine the future leadership of the Student Government Senate, as well as the president and vice president. The Election Commission promptly emailed all students a ballot, initiating the voting period that will extend until Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.
Students eager to cast their votes can do so through the official voting portal at vote.iastate.edu or opt for the traditional in-person voting stations located in front of Parks Library and UDCC. These physical voting locations will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering a convenient way for students to participate in shaping the future of their student body. In case of inclement weather, the Parks Library voting station will be relocated to the Memorial Union near the student organization’s office, ensuring that all students have equal access to exercise their voting rights.
Excitement builds as students eagerly await the unofficial preliminary results scheduled for release on Friday, providing a glimpse into the evolving landscape of the Student Government body. The 2025 Student Government Presidential race is set to be a thrilling showdown between Director Colby Brandt and Will Vlasek, facing off against Vice Speaker Josie Pursley and Senator Erik Rolwes. For an in-depth look at each candidate’s platform and vision, students are encouraged to explore the detailed profiles published by the Daily, offering valuable insights into the individuals vying for these esteemed positions.
Diving deeper into the heart of the election process, the Student Government Senate boasts a diverse pool of 17 candidates competing for the available 36 seats. However, several constituencies are experiencing a lack of representation, with key seats remaining vacant in critical areas such as the College of Design, Collegiate Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, College of Veterinary Medicine, and Schilletter and University Village. Despite these gaps, certain constituencies are witnessing fierce competition, as evidenced by the race previews meticulously crafted by the Daily for constituencies including the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, United Residents of Off-Campus, Inter-Residence Hall Association, and Frederiksen Court.
Unfortunately, the College of Human Sciences and the Ivy College of Business have yet to respond to repeated interview requests from the Daily, leaving students curious about the candidates representing these crucial constituencies. This lack of engagement underscores the importance of transparency and communication in the electoral process, emphasizing the need for active participation and commitment from all stakeholders involved in shaping the future of the Student Government.
As the election season unfolds, students are encouraged to stay informed, engage with the candidates’ platforms, and exercise their voting rights to ensure that their voices are heard and represented in the Student Government body.
