Community Unites in Response to Massive Fire at Mason City Recycling
Late on the evening of January 17, 2025, a major fire broke out at Mason City Recycling, located at 16615 245th Street in Mason City. The blaze was first reported at 8:08 PM, prompting a swift response from the Mason City Fire Department and several other agencies.
Firefighters Battle Blaze Amidst Challenging Conditions
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters were met with a large, active fire burning inside one of the recycling facility’s buildings. The absence of nearby fire hydrants forced crews to transport water to the location, complicating their efforts to contain the flames.
Adding to the challenge were frigid temperatures and strong North/Northwest winds, which caused the fire to spread to outdoor equipment and nearby grassy areas. Despite these obstacles, a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including the Rockwell, Nora Springs, Clear Lake, and Ventura Fire Departments, as well as law enforcement and utility companies, helped prevent the blaze from spreading further.

In a heartwarming display of community support, local businesses like Hy-Vee Food Store, Domino’s Pizza, and Kwik Star stepped up to provide food and water for the exhausted responders. Helena Agri-Enterprises LLC also played a crucial role by supplying water using a semi-tanker to aid in firefighting efforts.
As the night wore on, firefighters worked tirelessly to stop the fire from reaching neighboring structures. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the incident, a testament to the quick actions and coordination of all involved.

As of Saturday afternoon, the Mason City Fire Department remains vigilant, keeping a close eye on the situation. While some materials inside the building continue to burn, the structure has been deemed unsafe for entry due to structural damage.
