Spring 2025 Graduation: Navigating the Transition
As the school year draws to a close, Iowa State University students are gearing up for graduation. With deadlines fast approaching, the transition to May graduation can be a source of stress for many. To help ease the process, here is a comprehensive checklist to ensure a smooth and successful transition into the next chapter of their lives.
Applying for Program Completion
The first step towards graduation is applying for program completion in Workday. By logging into the Workday Student account, students can navigate to the Academics section and click on Apply for Program Completion under the Graduation tab. This application must be submitted for one or more programs of study, with the expected completion date set for May 16.
According to Abbie Suntken, a Registrar specialist, the application process in Workday was introduced in the fall of 2024. Once the application is submitted, students’ status on their academics overview page will reflect “Pending Completion.” Subsequently, the status will be updated to “approved,” “denied,” or “evaluation deferred.” A notification will be sent to the graduate indicating the outcome.
Should a student’s application be approved, it signifies that all degree requirements have been met. However, if the application is denied or evaluation deferred, further action will be necessary. In such cases, students are advised to consult with their advisors to address any unmet degree requirements promptly.
Transferring Coursework and Diploma Delivery
Another crucial aspect of the graduation process is transferring coursework from other institutions. Official transcripts must be submitted to the Iowa State admissions office either in PDF format via email or as a paper transcript through the mail.
Once the program completion application in Workday is accepted, students will receive a to-do list in their Iowa State email. This list includes a Diploma Delivery selection questionnaire, where graduates can choose to have their diploma delivered to their home address or opt for pickup at the Office of the Registrar.
Students are encouraged to review their diploma mailing address and make any necessary changes through the “Change My Home Contact Information” option in Workday.
Preparing for the Ceremony
To participate in the graduation ceremony on May 17, students must complete the RSVP form for the commencement ceremony. In cases where students wish to walk early or later than the planned graduation term, they can reach out to the designated email address for assistance.
Additionally, undergraduate students who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher are eligible to graduate “with distinction” and wear distinction cords during the ceremony. The distinctions of Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude are awarded based on specific GPA thresholds.
For further details on eligibility criteria, students are advised to consult the official guidelines.
In conclusion, the journey to graduation is a significant milestone in every student’s academic career. By following this checklist and staying organized throughout the process, students can ensure a seamless transition into the next phase of their lives. As they don their cap and gown, ready to embark on new adventures, the memories and friendships forged at Iowa State will forever remain a cherished part of their journey.
