Sigma Chi Fraternity Makes Triumphant Return to Iowa State Campus
The Sigma Chi fraternity is making a long-awaited comeback to Iowa State University, marking a significant moment for both its alumni and current members. The fraternity house, located at Iowa State, will once again be filled with the vibrant energy and brotherhood that Sigma Chi is known for. This revival comes after a tumultuous period for the chapter, including a suspension in 2017 due to hazing allegations and subsequent closure in 2018 by the International Fraternity’s Executive Committee.
Reflecting on the past, Pete Rogers, president of the corporation board for Sigma Chi Beta Omicron and an alumnus of the fraternity at Iowa State, shared fond memories of his time at the Sigma Chi house. Rogers, who attended Iowa State from 1977 to 1981, emphasized the importance of the brotherhood and lasting friendships forged within the fraternity. He expressed his excitement for the current members, noting that they too will have the opportunity to create cherished memories and lifelong bonds.
The road to reinstatement has not been easy for Sigma Chi. Rogers revealed that the fraternity lost the trust of the Iowa State University Greek system, leading to their removal from campus. However, he commended the current members for their efforts to meet the necessary requirements for recognition, paving the way for Sigma Chi to regain its official status within the university.
Lucas Smidt, a sophomore studying computer science and the current chapter president of Sigma Chi, highlighted the resilience and determination of the fraternity members. Despite facing challenges during their time off campus, Smidt shared his enthusiasm for rebuilding Sigma Chi’s legacy at Iowa State. He emphasized the fraternity’s commitment to recruiting quality members and fostering personal growth among its brothers.
Stephen Terrill, a former corporation board president and Sigma Chi alum at Iowa State, acknowledged the hardships faced during the fraternity’s journey back to campus. Terrill described the process of starting anew and rebuilding the chapter from the ground up. He expressed gratitude for the timely availability of the house and the positive momentum gained through the recruitment efforts.
Looking ahead, Terrill revealed that Sigma Chi is on track to be reinstalled as an official chapter at Iowa State. With a target membership goal set at 35 members, the fraternity is gearing up for a summer rush and plans for all members to move in by the fall. Despite the challenges encountered along the way, Terrill expressed optimism about the future of Sigma Chi at Iowa State.
As the Sigma Chi fraternity prepares to resume its place within the Iowa State community, the spirit of brotherhood and camaraderie shines brightly. The return of Sigma Chi serves as a testament to the resilience and dedication of its members, both past and present. With a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to upholding the values of the fraternity, Sigma Chi looks forward to creating a vibrant and inclusive environment for all its members.
