Battery Safety Warning: Protecting Iowa Kids from Holiday Toy Hazards
If you’re unwrapping hand-held video games, watches, or any other electronics this holiday season, beware of the tiny, shiny batteries that come with them. These button-sized batteries pose a serious threat if swallowed by a child, leading to potentially life-threatening consequences.
Janna Day, a nurse and the education and outreach manager at the Iowa Poison Control Center, warns that when a child ingests one of these batteries, the moisture in the throat can trigger the flow of current within the battery. This can result in severe damage to the esophagus, the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach. The burning sensation can occur rapidly, within just a few hours of ingestion, causing significant harm.
The Dangers of Button Batteries
These tiny batteries can be found in a wide range of household items, from bathroom scales to hearing aids, making them easily accessible to curious children. If a battery is swallowed, it often requires a trip to the emergency room for X-rays to locate and remove it safely.
“If you suspect that a child has swallowed one of these small button batteries, do not hesitate to contact us immediately,” advises Day. “It is a medical emergency that requires prompt attention to prevent serious complications.”
Other Holiday Hazards
In addition to button batteries, other potential hazards lurk in our homes during the holiday season. Many Iowans store ice melting products in their garages for use on icy sidewalks and driveways. Day cautions that these tiny granules may look appealing to young children, so it’s crucial to store them out of reach.
“Keep your ice melt securely stored away from children and pets,” urges Day. “Store it in its original packaging, as this can provide crucial information in case of ingestion. If you need to contact us, having the original container handy can be extremely helpful.”
