Sioux City – So, like, this dude from Mason City, you know, he’s got a bit of a reputation for causing trouble in the community. Brandon Mitchell, a 28-year-old fella, pled guilty in federal court on April 30, 2025. He’s facing some serious charges for being caught with a firearm when he wasn’t supposed to have one. Apparently, this ain’t his first rodeo when it comes to run-ins with the law.

Mitchell had been convicted not once, but twice for domestic violence in Cerro Gordo County. Because of his past convictions, he was banned from owning any firearms. At the hearing, he confessed to having a couple of prior convictions for domestic violence misdemeanors. And get this, he was also using marijuana illegally. On top of all that, it turns out he was indicted for some pretty heavy stuff like attempted murder and possession of a firearm while being a domestic abuser. And to make matters worse, when the cops came knocking with a search warrant, he chucked the gun out the window in a feeble attempt to hide it.

This whole mess falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which is basically a program that aims to crack down on violent crime and gun violence in communities. It’s like they’re trying to make the streets safer for everyone, which is a pretty noble cause if you ask me.

The sentencing is gonna happen once they whip up a presentence report for Mitchell. Right now, he’s cooling his heels in custody under the watchful eye of the United States Marshal. If he’s found guilty, he could be looking at up to 15 years behind bars, a hefty $250,000 fine, and a few years of supervised release after that. Not a great situation to be in, that’s for sure.

The investigation into Mitchell’s case was a joint effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Iowa Division of Narcotic Enforcement, and the Mason City Police Department. They’ve all put in the hard work to bring this dude to justice. The case is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Kraig R. Hamit, who’s got his work cut out for him with this one.

In the end, it’s clear that Mitchell’s actions have consequences, and he’s gonna have to face the music for his choices. Let’s hope that this serves as a lesson for others who think they can get away with breaking the law. The streets of Mason City won’t be safe with folks like him running around unchecked. Let’s hope justice is served swiftly and fairly in this case.
