Childhood Sweethearts from Clarion
Both Virginia and Lee were born in Clarion, Iowa, and fate brought them together at Clarion High School. Lee, a star athlete, caught the eye of Virginia, a cheerleader and Homecoming Queen. After graduating in 1952, they tied the knot and embarked on a remarkable journey that would last a lifetime.
Building a Life in Clear Lake
In 1956, the couple moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, where Lee began a successful 40-year career as a salesman for the Clear Lake Bakery. Known for his friendly and outgoing nature, Lee made countless friends along his route while Virginia took care of their five young children and managed their investment property, Lee’s Modern Cottages.
A Life Filled with Faith, Family, and Fun
Faith, family, and friends were always at the core of Virginia and Lee’s life. They were active members of Zion Lutheran Church, where they served as ushers and volunteered at the Community Kitchen. From bowling and playing cards with friends to cheering on their children at sporting events, the Melhus family’s bond was unbreakable.
A Lasting Legacy

In lieu of a funeral service, they will be laid to rest together in a private graveside ceremony. Memorials can be directed to their family, who will share them with the Clear Lake community in honor of Virginia and Lee’s memory.
