In a small town nestled in the heart of Iowa, a vibrant soul bid farewell to the world she had graced for 93 years. Florence Elizabeth Smith, a beloved member of the community, passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar on February 23, 2025. Her journey began on June 19, 1931, on the family farm near Dover, Minnesota, where she was born to Louis and Leona Wegman. Growing up, Florence was a devoted daughter, always eager to assist her father and finding joy in the simple pleasures of plowing fields with horses.

Despite her deep-rooted religious beliefs, Florence embarked on a path less traveled. She initially considered joining the convent but later felt the calling to embrace motherhood and family life. Her story took a new turn when she crossed paths with Gerwin Smith at the Pla-mor dance hall in Rochester, Minnesota. Their chance encounter blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and on October 24, 1959, Florence exchanged vows with the love of her life.

Together, Florence and Gerwin built a life filled with love, laughter, and hard work on a dairy farm near Meyer, Iowa. As they nurtured their four children, Florence found fulfillment in the roles of a devoted mother, a skilled gardener, and a dedicated farmhand. Her culinary talents and affection for furry companions added warmth and joy to their household, creating a tapestry of cherished memories that would endure through the years.

After her children had grown, Florence dedicated 27 years of her life to serving the residents of the Mitchell County Care Facility, embodying compassion and selflessness in her work. Her legacy of kindness and dedication lives on through the lives she touched and the hearts she uplifted.

Florence is survived by her children, Anne (Jerry) Yamriska, Gary Smith, Robert (Mina) Smith; grandchildren, Emily and Zachary Smith; siblings, Rosemary Hemann, Marvin (Exe) Wegman, Donald Wegman, and Regina (Tim) Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband Gerwin, daughter Jane Smith, parents, and several siblings.

As the community mourns the loss of a remarkable woman, preparations are underway to honor Florence’s life and legacy. A funeral Mass is scheduled to take place at Sacred Heart Church in Osage, Iowa, on March 3, 2025. Prior to the service, a visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral at 10:30 a.m. Florence will find her final resting place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage, Iowa, surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the countryside she cherished. A gathering for family and friends will follow the service, offering a moment of solace and shared memories.

In this time of sorrow, Champion Funeral Home of Osage stands as a pillar of support, assisting the family with the necessary arrangements to ensure a fitting tribute to Florence’s life. As the community comes together to celebrate her legacy, may her spirit continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Florence’s journey may have come to an end, but her light will forever illuminate the lives of those she touched with her kindness, grace, and unwavering love. In the tapestry of life, her thread will remain a vibrant hue, weaving through the memories of those who were fortunate enough to share in her joy and warmth. As we bid farewell to a cherished member of our community, let us carry forward the lessons of compassion, dedication, and love that Florence exemplified in her time among us.
