In a groundbreaking study conducted by the Iowa Pork Producers Association, it has been revealed that the hog industry made a significant contribution of over $15 billion to Iowa’s economy last year. This study, which is conducted every four years, sheds light on the vital role played by pig farmers in the state’s economic landscape. 120,000 Jobs Created by the Pork Industry
Association spokesman Kevin Hall emphasized the importance of the pork industry in Iowa, stating that it is responsible for creating over 120,000 jobs in the state. These jobs are distributed across various sectors within the industry, including hog production, hog slaughter, and hog processing. With 64,000 jobs in hog production, 39,000 in hog slaughter, and an additional 16,000 in hog processing, the pork industry has become a significant employer in Iowa.

Top Iowa Counties Driving the Pork Industry
The study identified the top five Iowa counties for hog inventories, with Washington, Sioux, Lyon, Plymouth, and Hardin leading the pack. Among these counties, Washington, Sioux, and Lyon each boast more than one million pigs, underscoring their significant contribution to the state’s pork industry.
