The Iowa State Letterwinners Club recently announced the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2025, inviting six former Cyclone athletes and administrators to be inducted in a ceremony on October 24 at the Sukup End Zone Club in Ames. To be eligible for this prestigious honor, athletes and coaches must be 10 years removed from their final season of competition at Iowa State, although this waiting period can be waived for those who conclude their careers within the university’s intercollegiate athletics program.

Established in 1997, the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame has recognized 216 Cyclone legends, selected by a committee of Iowa State administrators and athletic alumni. This year’s class includes notable figures who have left a lasting impact on the university’s athletic history.

Meet the 2025 Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees

Chris Bono, a standout wrestler from 1994-1997, boasts an impressive resume including three-time All-American honors, an NCAA Championship at 150 pounds in 1996, and a runner-up finish in 1997. Bono’s career highlights also feature two conference championships, recognition as the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Big 12 Championship in 1997, and being named the Iowa State Male Athlete of the Year in 1997. With a 130-35 record, Bono ranks fifth in school history for most wins and has continued to contribute to the wrestling community as a coach and Hall of Fame inductee.

Erin Dethloff, a talented women’s gymnast from 2003-2006, captured the hearts of fans with her seven-time All-American status and first-team All-American title in all-around gymnastics in 2006. Dethloff’s achievements also include two Big 12 Championships on bars, appearances at four NCAA Championships, and multiple All-Big 12 recognitions. Her leadership on the Big 12 Champion and NCAA Super Six team in 2006 solidified her legacy as a gymnastics icon at Iowa State.

A.J. Klein, a standout football player from 2009-2012, left an indelible mark on the field as a two-time First Team All-Big 12 linebacker, earning the title of Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2011. Klein’s remarkable career included a fourth-most tackles in Iowa State history, four career interception returns for a touchdown, and a successful transition to the NFL where he started 82 games over an 11-year career. His impact on the gridiron continues to inspire future generations of Cyclone football players.

Richard Larsen, a distinguished men’s gymnast from 1972-1975, showcased his skills as an NCAA Champion on the high bar and a Big Eight Champion in the same event. Larsen’s impressive career culminated in a school record on vault and membership on four Big Eight champion teams and two NCAA Championship teams. His dedication and talent have solidified his place in Iowa State’s athletic history.

Erica Martinez, a standout softball player from 2000-2003, made her mark on the diamond with accolades such as being named a Third Team All-American by Easton in 2002 and earning three First Team All-Big 12 selections. Martinez’s impressive stats include ranking in the top 10 in career batting average and strikeouts thrown at Iowa State, as well as setting school records in home runs, RBI, and walks. Her contributions to Iowa State softball have left a lasting legacy on the program.

Gene Smith, the former Athletics Director from 1993-2000, played a pivotal role in shaping Iowa State’s athletic landscape with significant achievements such as overseeing massive facility improvements, advocating for the renaming of the football stadium to Jack Trice Stadium, and establishing the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame. Smith’s leadership led to conference titles in various sports, a NCAA title in men’s cross country, and successful coaching hires that elevated Cyclone athletics to new heights.
