Remembering Marlene C. May: A Legacy of Love and Resilience
Marlene C. May, a beloved member of the North Iowa community, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City at the age of 84. Her life will be honored and celebrated during funeral services on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in New Hampton, with her brother, Rev. Larry Chapin, presiding. The interment will follow at the Fremont Cemetery in Tripoli. Friends and family will have the opportunity to pay their respects from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
An Inspiring Journey of Love and Resilience
Marlene’s story is one of strength, love, and resilience. Born on September 10, 1940, in Rural Bremer County, she was the second child of Lynn and Rosemary Chapin. Marlene grew up in a large family of nine children, where she played a vital role as a mother figure to her younger siblings. Her nurturing nature and caring spirit were evident from a young age.
During her high school years, Marlene worked as a waitress at Holley’s, showcasing her strong work ethic and dedication. After graduating from New Hampton High School in 1959, she embarked on a four-year journey working at Shield Bantam in Waverly, where she continued to display her unwavering commitment to her responsibilities.
A Love Story and Family Legacy
Marlene’s life took a beautiful turn when she met Allyn Buenger at a dance in Janesville. Their love story blossomed, leading to their marriage on June 25, 1961, at the Congregational Church in New Hampton. Together, they built a life on the Buenger family farm in rural Tripoli, where they raised animals and faced the challenges of starting a family.
Despite the hardships they encountered, including a heartbreaking miscarriage, Marlene and Allyn welcomed their son, Brent Allyn Buenger, into the world on August 3, 1967. Marlene’s devotion to her family shone through as she sewed their clothes, creating special moments and memories that would last a lifetime.
As life presented its twists and turns, Marlene navigated challenges with grace and determination. From walking to work at Luigi’s Restaurant & Lounge as a waitress to finding stability at the Sara Lee plant in New Hampton, Marlene’s resilience and perseverance were unwavering.
A Legacy of Love and Generosity
Marlene’s impact extended far beyond her immediate family. Her marriage to Russell May in 1977 brought new joys and connections into her life. Marlene’s love for her family, especially her grandson, Bode Buenger, brought her immense happiness and fulfillment.
Through her passion for baking, flower arranging, and friendship, Marlene touched the lives of many, spreading joy and warmth wherever she went. Her vibrant personality, love for bling, and impeccable style made her a memorable presence in the community.
As Marlene’s journey on earth comes to an end, her legacy of love, resilience, and generosity will continue to inspire all who knew her. She leaves behind a lasting impact on her son, grandson, siblings, and a host of nieces and nephews, who will carry her memory in their hearts forever.
