MADISON COUNTY, IOWA – In a heartbreaking turn of events, an Iowa man lost his life after his vehicle broke through the ice while attempting to enjoy some recreational ice fishing. The victim, identified as 55-year-old Jeffrey Gene Poush of Cumming, Iowa, tragically passed away after the incident at Badger Creek State Recreational Area in northern Madison County, Iowa.
Details of the Incident
Madison County Sheriff Jason Barnes reported that on January 10, 2025, at approximately 10:20 AM, authorities received a distress call regarding a deceased adult male found near Badger Creek Lake. Poush was discovered in the frigid waters, having driven his vehicle onto what seemed like a frozen surface for a day of ice fishing. However, the thin ice gave way, causing both him and his vehicle to plunge into the lake’s depths.
Rescue Efforts and Tragic Outcome
Despite his valiant efforts to free himself from the sinking vehicle and make it to shore, Poush succumbed to his injuries shortly after. He was the sole witness to the tragic event, with no one present to provide immediate assistance. His body was recovered and transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny for further examination and an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
