UNI Panthers Struggle in 73-49 Loss at Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS – In a tough matchup on Saturday night, the UNI men’s basketball team faced a challenging loss against Southern Illinois at the Banterra Center, with the Panthers falling 73-49. The game was a test of speed and shooting prowess, with the Salukis proving to be a formidable opponent.

Slow Start for UNI

The Panthers found themselves in a tough spot right from the beginning, as Southern Illinois took an early 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. UNI’s offense struggled to find its rhythm in the first half, shooting just 14% on four-of-28 shot attempts. Despite efforts to get back into the game and working their way into the bonus, Northern Iowa also faced challenges at the free-throw line, making only seven-of-15 attempts.

Second Half Efforts

Coming out of halftime, UNI showed signs of improvement on offense, shooting 52% with 13 made shots on 25 attempts. However, the Salukis continued to dominate, maintaining a strong lead throughout the game. Max Weisbrod and Trey Campbell made significant contributions in the final 20 minutes, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Player Standouts

Tytan Anderson, Trey Campbell, and Max Weisbrod led Northern Iowa with nine points each, with Anderson also showcasing his skills with five rebounds and a pair of steals. Other notable performances included Jacob Hutson, Ben Schwieger, Leon Bond III, and Redek Born, who all made valuable contributions to the team’s effort.

Despite the challenging loss, the Panthers are gearing up for their next game against the Missouri State Bears on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at the McLeod Center, with live coverage available on ESPN+ and the Panther Sports Radio Network.
