Early Life and Community Involvement
Born on August 10, 1934, in Mason City to Albert and Bernice Lester, Arlene’s journey began in a tight-knit family setting. After graduating from Mason City High School, Arlene’s passion for caregiving led her to briefly attend Nursing School in Minnesota. Her dedication to helping others extended beyond her professional life, as she provided care for her mother following her father’s passing.
Arlene’s community involvement was extensive, from her years of service at Bankers Life Insurance to owning and operating Independent Secretarial Services. She was a familiar face at charity auctions throughout North Iowa, where she selflessly served meals. Her commitment to organizations like the Wa-Tan-Ye Club and her active participation in the Youth Bowling league and as a Girl Scout Leader showcased her deep-rooted connection to her community.
Transitioning through Faith and Friendship
In matters of faith, Arlene’s journey was one of evolution and growth. From her early years attending First Christian Church to later becoming a member at Grace United Methodist Church, Arlene’s spiritual life was marked by service and dedication. Her roles as the chairperson of the Board of Trustees and president of the Grace United Methodist Women’s group exemplified her leadership and commitment to her church community.
Amidst her busy schedule, Arlene found solace in the company of her sister Betty, sharing weekly phone calls and participating in card clubs. Known for her quick wit and mischievous smile, Arlene’s sense of humor was a source of joy for those around her. As a member of the “Golden Girls,” she embodied the spirit of camaraderie and fun that defined her relationships.
A Legacy of Love and Compassion
Arlene’s love for animals, particularly cats and birds, was a defining aspect of her character. Through in-home foster care for cats and tending to her yard’s flowers, she found joy in caring for the world around her. As a grandmother and great-grandmother, Arlene’s nurturing spirit earned her the endearing titles of “Darling Grandma” and “GG Lene,” reflecting the deep bonds she shared with her family.
Survived by her daughter, Cindy Gaubatz, son Chip (Teresa) Van Horn, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Arlene’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched. Her dear friend, Marlyn “Jo” Lienemann, stood by her side through life’s challenges, a testament to the enduring friendships Arlene cultivated.
