A Blood Drive at Iowa State University: A Lifesaving Opportunity with Exciting Incentives
Iowa State University is gearing up for a life-saving event that offers not only a chance to make a difference but also some exciting prizes for participants. The blood drive, set to take place in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union, promises a free t-shirt, the opportunity to win prizes, and a $10 Amazon gift card sent directly to the donor’s email address.
The blood drive is scheduled to run from March 10 to 12, with donation hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Located in the heart of the Memorial Union, the event aims to attract students, faculty, and community members alike to contribute to a noble cause. Kyle Nord, co-director of the blood drive, emphasized the importance of having a valid driver’s license for donation.
“When signing up to donate, participants will need to complete a rapid pass, which includes background checks to ensure eligibility for blood donation,” Nord explained. This process involves a brief discussion of health history, followed by a choice between a normal blood donation or a power red donation.
While the difference between the two options may seem subtle, Nord shed light on the unique benefits of a power red donation. “Power red donation may take an extra five to ten minutes compared to a normal donation, but it involves receiving saline back into the system,” Nord elaborated. “This added saline helps rehydrate the donor, making them feel better post-donation. However, this option is only available for individuals with specific blood types, including O negative, O positive, A negative, or B negative.”
Ensuring the well-being of donors, Red Cross nurses will be present at the event to provide assistance if needed. Nord highlighted the provision of a separate area to care for individuals who may feel faint or overwhelmed during the donation process. “Although instances of donors passing out have decreased over time, we take extra precautions to address any concerns promptly,” Nord assured.
Following the donation, Nord emphasized the importance of post-donation care, including access to a snack area for donors to refuel and hydrate. “It’s crucial to replenish your energy levels and stay hydrated after donating blood,” Nord advised, underlining the significance of donor well-being throughout the process.
To participate in this meaningful event, interested individuals can easily sign up by following a few simple steps outlined by Nord:
