The Charles City community is mourning the loss of a beloved member, Douglas “Doug” Saunders, who passed away on January 13, 2025, at the age of 84. A Life of Service and Dedication
Born on September 4, 1940, in Norfolk, Nebraska, Doug grew up in Belmond, Iowa, where he received his education before attending Hamilton Business School in Mason City. After completing his schooling, Doug embarked on a successful career as a staff accountant at Embusk and Company in Mason City. In 1963, Doug married the love of his life, Jan Stephens, and the couple moved to Charles City, where Doug continued his career as an accountant, eventually becoming a partner and later owning his own firm before retiring in 2000.
Doug was not only dedicated to his career but also to his community. He was a proud member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Lions Club, and the Elks Lodge, where he enjoyed playing Euchre. Doug’s true joy, however, came from supporting his grandchildren in their sporting events and indulging in his passion for golf. He was a longtime member and stockholder of the Charles City Country Club and spent many winters golfing in Sun City, Arizona, with Jan by his side.
