Remembering Robert Mark Shunkwiler: A Tribute on NorthIowaToday

Robert Mark Shunkwiler, a beloved resident of Mason City, Iowa, passed away peacefully at the age of 78 in his home on January 12, 2025. In honoring his wishes, no formal services will be held to commemorate his life.

A Life Well-Lived

Born on December 15, 1946, in Mason City, Robert was the son of Cecil and Elsie Shunkwiler. He was a proud graduate of Mason City High School before embarking on various adventures that took him far from his hometown. His journey led him to work on a boat in Alaska for several years, followed by a decade spent as a bartender in Seattle. Despite the distance, Robert’s heart always remained in Mason City, and in 2005, he returned to be closer to his beloved mother, with whom he shared a special bond.

In his leisure time, Robert found joy in watching sports on television and attending live games whenever possible. He was known for his remarkable memory, never failing to remember birthdays and anniversaries, and always generous with the gifts he gave to celebrate these special occasions.

A Lasting Legacy

Robert Shunkwiler leaves behind a legacy cherished by his siblings, Dean, Wanda, Elsie, Glen (Rita), Paul, and Jerry, as well as his dear friends Jodi Miller and Vickie Eustice. While he is no longer with us, his memory will forever be treasured by those who knew and loved him.

Preceding Robert in death are his parents, three siblings prior to his birth, and sisters Dorothy Shunkwiler and Anna May Northrup. As we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, let us take comfort in the memories we shared with Robert and the impact he had on our lives.

In honoring Robert Mark Shunkwiler’s life, let us remember the joy he brought to those around him and the kindness he showed to all. May his spirit live on in the hearts of those who knew him best.
