Iowa Red Cross Volunteers Support LA Wildfire Victims
A team of Red Cross volunteers from Iowa has rushed to the Los Angeles area to aid residents affected by the devastating wildfires amidst the return of powerful Santa Ana winds. Emily Holley, a spokeswoman for the Red Cross’ Nebraska-Iowa region, revealed that three Iowans are part of the 350 volunteers and staffers on the ground in southern California, where the destruction could exceed $150 billion.
Iowa Volunteers Provide Shelter and Support
The Iowa volunteers are primarily focused on providing shelter assistance, with 900 evacuees waking up in Red Cross shelters just yesterday. These shelters serve as havens for those forced to flee their homes due to the fires, and the Iowans are dedicated to ensuring the smooth operation of these critical facilities.
Red Cross Volunteers Offer Varied Support Services
Tragically, at least two dozen individuals have lost their lives in the fires, with over 12,000 structures destroyed, prompting tens of thousands of Los Angeles residents to seek safety in shelters. Holley emphasized the diverse skill set of Red Cross volunteers, who are adept at tasks ranging from meal preparation for large groups to providing mental health support for survivors.
“When we are supporting our shelters, we have folks that are in charge of feeding, we have folks that are in charge of the inner workings of the shelter,” Holley explained. “We have folks that are sitting down with those who’ve been affected and just listening to them, making them feel heard and supported.”
Standing Strong Through Challenges
In the face of historic flooding and tornadoes in Iowa, as well as hurricane damage in states like Florida and North Carolina, Red Cross volunteers have consistently risen to the occasion. Holley reiterated the organization’s commitment to solidarity, stating, “We want to make sure that folks know that they are not going through this alone, that the Red Cross is there with them.”
