State Grants Awarded to Five Small Town Iowa Businesses – Radio Iowa
Three small town grocery stores are among five businesses to receive $5,000 grants from the state. The Iowa Economic Development Authority spokesperson, Kannen Kappleman, announced that the grants are specifically aimed at rural communities in Iowa. These grants are designed to support projects that benefit communities with a population of 20,000 or fewer and are not adjacent to cities with a population exceeding 40,000 residents. Additionally, the businesses must be located in one of the 88 least populous counties in Iowa.
La Perla Jarocha Store in Webster City, known for its diverse range of products from Latin America and other countries, was one of the recipients of the grants. The store plans to expand its storage capacity to accommodate a wider variety of inventory, including a year-round selection of fresh produce and perishable goods. This expansion aims to enhance the store’s offerings and better serve its customers.
In Pocahontas County, Woods Supermarket received a grant to install shelf tags that will streamline price changes and save staff time. Being the sole grocery store in the county, this enhancement will help the store maintain its competitiveness in the market. Freeman Foods in North English & Wellman also obtained a grant to upgrade technology at its grocery locations. These upgrades will facilitate online ordering, pick-up, and delivery services for customers in Washington and Keokuk counties, enhancing the overall shopping experience.
In the manufacturing sector, Lansing Housing Products was awarded a grant to expand its market reach to Japan and hurricane-prone regions. The company specializes in patented safety screens that cater to specific needs in these regions. Calyx Creek Lavender & Lodging in Oxford received a grant to bring production of lavender products in-house and develop six new products using locally grown Iowa lavender. These products include lavender-infused baking mixes, syrups, drink blends, and culinary lavender buds, showcasing the diverse applications of this fragrant herb.
