Clear Lake, IA – A pillar of the Clear Lake community, Gary Nyhus, passed away on January 5th, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and kindness that touched the lives of all who knew him. Born on October 5, 1944, Gary was a beloved educator, coach, and mentor, known for his unwavering commitment to his family, students, and community.
A celebration of life funeral service honoring Gary Nyhus will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, Iowa. Lay Pastor Al Berge will officiate the service. Prior to the funeral, a visitation will take place on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake. Gary will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa.
Gary Nyhus: A Life of Service and Excellence
Gary Nyhus’s impact extended far beyond the walls of the classroom. Raised in Mason City, Iowa, Gary pursued his passion for education, serving as a math teacher, department chair, and mentor at Newman High School for over 38 years. He also dedicated his time to coaching, leading Newman’s baseball team to unprecedented success with 20 consecutive conference championships and a state title in 1998. His coaching legacy includes a remarkable career record of 628-155, solidifying his place among the top high school baseball coaches nationally.
In addition to his professional achievements, Gary was deeply involved in his community, serving on various boards and volunteering his time to organizations like MercyOne and hospice care. His commitment to service and compassion touched the lives of many, reflecting his values of kindness and generosity.

Survived by his loving wife Sandy, sons Chad and Jason, grandchildren Finley and Ciella, as well as extended family members, Gary will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, mentor, and friend. His passion for education, leadership on the field, and unwavering commitment to his community will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
